History

Mohawk McKenzie Grange #747 was chartered in 1930.  The original Grange hall was small building that had been moved to a site on the banks of the Mohawk River near its confluence with the McKenzie.  The hall sat on a corner of Red and Cleo Hill’s property along Hill Road.  They leased that lot to the Grange for 99 years or as long as the Grange was active.  The Hills sold to Ray Keene in about 1951 and around that time the meeting hall addition was built by volunteer labor.

The hall withstood the great 1964 flood but the ’96 version caused damage that was undetected until later. The building’s underpinnings began to rot and by the time the problem was discovered around 2011 it was obvious that repairs would be cost-prohibitive, given the fact that only 20 years remained on our ground lease.

In the meantime, as happens sometimes in membership organizations, the group at Willakenzie Grange was sliding into inactivity.  The Grange hall at 3055 Willakenzie Road had been built in 1913 specifically for the Grange, and the Oregon State Grange hoped to keep that historic building ‘in the family’.  So, Mohawk-McKenzie Grange moved into the historic Willakenzie Hall.

We are a friendly group of people who see an opportunity to make a difference in our community, and we recognize the value of meeting together in person to exchange ideas, discuss current events or just have fun and enjoy some good potluck.  Come join us!
