Mohawk McKenzie Grange #747 is the name of the community Grange that now meets in the historic Willakenzie Grange Hall. The Grange hall at 3055 Willakenzie Road was built in 1913 specifically to be Willakenzie Grange but after almost 100 years, as happens sometimes with local chapters of membership organizations, Willakenzie Grange was unable to maintain their charter. The Oregon State Grange was desirous of keeping an active Grange in the historic building and the members of Mohawk-McKenzie Grange were in need of a physical location, so the solution was obvious.
Mohawk-McKenzie Grange #747 was chartered by the National Grange in 1930. The original Grange hall was small building that had been moved to a site on the banks of the Mohawk River near its confluence with the McKenzie, on a corner of Red and Cleo Hill’s property along Hill Road. They leased that lot to the Grange for 99 years or as long as the Grange was active. The Hills sold to Ray Keene in about 1951 and around that time the meeting hall addition was built by volunteer labor.
The hall withstood the great 1964 flood but the ’96 version caused damage that was undetected until later. The building’s underpinnings began to rot and by the time the problem was discovered around 2011 it was obvious that repairs would be cost-prohibitive, given the fact that only 20 years remained on our ground lease. At about the same time the opportunity to move to the historic Willakenzie Grange hall materialized
We are a friendly group of people who see an opportunity to make a difference in our community, and we recognize the value of meeting together in person to exchange ideas, discuss current events or just have fun and enjoy some good potluck. Come join us! We meet on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays monthly at 7:30, and on the 2nd Wednesday we usually start with a potluck at 6pm. Visitors can sit in on Community Grange meetings.
