Quilts of Valor: Grange Challenge Our First Year

Members of the Gorham White Rock Grange and Highland Lake Grange recently joined the Maine Quilts of Valor with Donna Brookings, a chapter of the national Quilts of Valor program. As Granges, we challenge you, your friends, family and community to join us build quilt blocks for the Quilts of Valor program.

We are looking to make as many quilts as possible with a monthly block theme. Each quilt top requires (28) 12.5″ blocks. Make one or make a dozen, we will accept whatever you can make.

RULES:

  • 100% Cotton Fabric
  • No sparkles or glitter that rubs off fabric by hand or in wash
  • Use Red, White & Blue Fabric
  • Contact [email protected] or coordinate submission of your block
  • We will accept your monthly block submission at anytime! Craft November’s block in January, it’s OK!
  • Quilt Blocks will be sewn together by Grange Members, and be submitted for display at the 2019 Cumberland County Fair Grange Exhibit. At the close of the Fair, these beautiful works of love will be awarded to a veteran through the Quilts of Valor program.

This Dandy block is apart of a beautiful Independence Day quilt offered by the Quilter’s Cache. This block is a 9 patch block made up of 1/2 triangles and flying geese and can be put together many ways. Due to copyright restrictions, you must visit the Quilter’s Cache website to download the patterns. Please feel free to complete any of the blocks from the Independence Day quilt, they all will look great in our Quilts of Valor quilts!

  • February 2019 block challenge is the Star Pinwheel.
Again, I do not believe there is an official name for this month’s block, though we are going to use the Magic 8 Half Triangles again this month to achieve what I will call the Chevron Star. This month we will use this method for a 2 color block. This is a quick and easy method! Download the Magic 8 Half Triangle Method PDF instructions. We will use a 7 3/4″ block to create our 1/2 triangles. When sewn together in 4X4 rows, it will produce a 12.5″ finished block!

I do not believe there is an official name for this month’s block, though we are going to use a very specific method: Magic 8 Half Triangles to achieve what I will call the Star Pinwheel. This month we will use this method for a 3 color block. This is a quick and easy method! Download the Magic 8 Half Triangle Method PDF instructions. We will use a 7 3/4″ block to create our 1/2 triangles. When sewn together in 4X4 rows, it will produce a 12.5″ finished block!
