Our new Sewing instructor is Kathleen Rodegeb:
I always wanted to be a farmer and rancher, to have some land where I could raise meat, eggs and vegetables for my family and the community I lived in. But my life’s path took me into professional accounting with the federal government and it wasn’t until I retired that I was able to realize my dream of having a a small ranch, which I purchased just outside of Fallon after I retired. So far I’ve raised beef, chickens for eggs and a vegetable garden using organic methods.

I raised four wonderful children and they’ve given me four amazing grandchildren. I’ve always strived to provide a healthy and wholesome home and food for my family, including cooking and baking everything from scratch using the highest quality wholesome ingredients that I could get, and making clothing and household goods for my family as much as possible.

I started sewing when I was about seven years old, helping my mother and grandmother make aprons and potholders that I then sold door-to-door in our small town. I loved the idea that I could take some fabric, a needle and some thread, and make something from all of it. I loved making dolls and clothes for my little sister and eventually graduated to making my own garments on a treadle sewing machine that I bought from an aunt with $10.00 that I earned from babysitting. I was so proud of my sewing machine! Over the years I continued learning different sewing techniques through trial and error. Although sometimes something I made didn’t turn out right, I never shied from trying out new patterns that I loved, or even drafting my own patterns for such things as pajamas and outfits for my babies and even some garments for myself. I taught myself embroidery so I could add beautiful embellishments to the clothes I made for my children. When my children were very young I made quilts for each of them, as well as for others over the years and for my grandchildren as well. The quilts I made were tied, rather than quilted, due to time constraints, but now I’m teaching myself machine quilting and one day I’ll make at least one hand-quilted quilt, which is something I’ve always wanted to do. My fondest and most challenging sewing project was making my daughter’s exquisite wedding gown and the beautiful gowns for her brides maid and my two granddaughters, the tiny flower girls.
