Mt. Vernon Grange members keep busy with the on going activities of bingo and dances. After eight evenings of bingo we have entertained an average of 28 people on the first and third Thursdays of the month. The card sales are averaging 50 per evening. Everyone seems to enjoy the evening of bingo and socializing with popcorn, cookies and drinks available to munch on during the games.
The dances are sporadically attend with the last one, April 26, having a small attendance. Proceeds of this dance went to the John Day Food Bank.

Other activities beside our monthly meeting on the second Saturday evening of the month, include two church groups renting the hall weekly with one of the groups sponsoring a health seminar in March, a meeting of the Panama Ditch users, and funeral dinners.

On Sat. April 19th, a group of our members supported the Strawberry Mountain Grange by attending their Mexican diner fund raiser. Their Grange members put on a very good meal.

Senator Ted Ferrioli spoke at our May meeting explaining the propositions on the primary ballot. In June we held a general business meeting at the Hall proceeded by the ever delicious potluck dinner.
The July 11th meeting will be held at the Clyde Holliday Park with a potluck and barbecue hamburgers.Harriet Crum

Dear Fellow Grangers,

This was our latest event at our hall and it was a such a huge success! We just wanted to share with all of you the possibilities of a small community like ours’ and what a small group can do with just a little community outreach effort. We are so excited that we have started something so enormous in our area. Some affordable entertainment, fun and fellowship, and giving back to the community at the same time.

May 31, 2008

The Rainier Senior/Junior High School Drama Club presented “Broadway Night” for the public, with songs from several venues, including: the “High School Musical”, ”The Little Mermaid”, “Sweeney Todd”, ”42nd Street”, and many others. The Drama Club Teacher, Laurie Kash, did the introduction with her own performance of the theme song from the musical “Cabaret” to ease the tension of the students. The dinner included Chicken Cordon Bleu and New York Cheesecake for dessert. We entertained a full-house with standing-room-only for a crowd of approximately 120 people. The proceeds for our grange went to our building fund for renovations, with 40% of the total intake going to the Drama Club for their efforts. We plan on making this an annual event with the school district, and they are as excited as we are for this achievement. The students provide some of the costumed characters in our annual Haunted House, as well as the general public. We are hoping to encourage more young people and their families to participate in grange functions and show them the possibilities that they can contribute to the community through our organization. We hope to show others’ that affordable entertainment and community involvement go hand-in-hand. So far, we have proven that this is a win-win situation in today’s economy and for all involved.

I’ve already received some and I was very thrilled in looking them over. The check has been delivered to our food recepient for ‘08. Just a reminder to you all again. We’ve told them to expect more from us in June. I would be nice if we have over a ton or two of food. This committee looks forward seeing you all in Prinville for our ‘08 State Session. Clarann Witty

By Jim Welsh, Lobbyist March and April 2008

2008 Legislative Special Session Highlights

There are several perspectives concerning the 2008 Special Legislative Session here in Oregon during February 2008. The first two perspectives certainly contain partisan views or opinions because the Democrats have one perspective and the Republicans have another, and there were agreements from both parties on some issues and some legislation that received attention. Then there are many other perspectives, depending on who you ask, including the perspective of those who lobbied and that is presented at the end of these Session highlights.

There were 109 bills introduced, for the Special Session, and 73 were passed. Of the 36 that did not pass there were two that the natural resource coalition worked together to defeat. The first was HB 3627, legislation for the Oregon Sustainable Agriculture Resource Center (OSARC), which never made it out of Ways & Means Committee. This legislation will be back in 2009 but maybe, in the mean time, the proponents of the legislation will invite more of the agriculture community to the table. The second was HB 3610 establishing Green House Gas Emission (GHGE) reporting from our electric utilities and government sectors. This legislation was not needed as the Global Warming Commission had not met yet and the bill duplicated the climate change legislation goals of 2007, and further more the consumer owned utilities requirement to report GHGE is extraneous as the information is available from Bonneville Power Administration. Fortunately this legislation also died in the Ways & Means Committee. (more…)
